About FMI2012
Forum "Math-for-Industry" 2012 "Information Recovery and Discovery"
(Fukuoka International Congress Center, October 22 to 26, 2012)

fmi2012 The Forum "Math-for-Industry" is one of the major events of the Global COE (Center of Excellence) Program "Education-and-Research Hub for Mathematics-for-Industry" of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. Funding is for the five years from the fiscal year (FY) 2008 to FY 2012. Every year, the Forum not only involves graduate students, post-docs and researchers of universities and governmental institutes as participants, but also researchers from industries from all around the world. It therefore represents an excellent opportunity for a two-way exchange of information about the challenges in industry requiring mathematical expertise and the mathematics being stimulated in response to earlier questions posed by industry which are central to guaranteeing their efficiency and competitiveness.

The Forum, in this final year of the Global COE Program, will focus on "Information Recovery and Discovery" from the perspective of all the various ways in which "information" is an essential component of "Mathematics-for-Industry". This will necessarily involve matters connected with the development of new computer architectures and new computing protocols, such as cloud computing, the impact that such developments in information technology will have on the contemporary activities of people in terms of how they access and utilize information. Mathematical methods for recovering specific information from huge data sets, as arise across all areas of science and technology and for making provisions for the continuing information explosion will certainly be an important focus of the deliberations. In addition, those aspects of information recovery and discovery which are central to the advancement of Math-for-Industry will be given special attention. The 2012 Forum will be organized along the lines of the previous successful ones which highlighted information security, visualization and inverse problems, along with their application to real world problems. In those Forums, optimization and statistics proved indispensable and will play an equally important role in 2012. The topics to be discussed will cover those aspects of mathematics and the mathematical sciences that, in particular, highlight recent trends and demands for mathematics by industry and technology, both domestic and international.

At 2011 Math-for-Industry Forum, the Asia-Pacific Consortium of Mathematics-for-Industry (APCMI) was inaugurated. The major objective was to create in the East Asian and Pacific region a strong regional and international platform for fostering and enhancing collaboration, research and education activities directly involved with mathematics responding to the various needs of and for industry. At the 2012 Forum, efforts will focus on strengthening the interaction of APCMI with East Asian and Pacific institutions and colleagues. Moreover, efforts will be made to enlarge the platform to a global scale.
